Hi friend,
How are you?
But really, how are you? Comment below.
Can you believe that we all belong to more communities than we often realize?
These communities shape us, connect us, and reflect the many layers of who we are.
Before I felt really alone, truly believing that I didn’t belong anywhere.
The thought “I am one of them” has been popping up in my head lately.
It happened at my Hālau (hula school) this week. It was our first class in this new school year. It was incredible. Pictured Above.
Then again, today, I stumbled upon a library in my city I had never visited before—which surprised me, since I thought I had already explored them all. I stepped inside, I found they had French and Spanish books! I wanted to check some out and I could, because I already had a library card for this place. Of course I did. It was in my city, and I have a citywide card. But still, it meant something.
I had never set foot in this place, and yet somehow, I already belonged. It was like the building had been waiting for me—like I was part of its quiet little world all along. And not just this library, but all libraries. That card was proof. I wasn’t just visiting; I was a member. A stranger, yes—but one who belonged.
Because this feeling of belonging has been surfacing more often, I decided to sit down and write out all the communities where I’ve felt that same sense of connection—places, people, and passions that remind me I’m not alone.
I didn’t overthink it. I just let my heart speak. Here’s what came out, in the order it chose to reveal them. These are the communities that I am proud to say that I am a part of:

Do we share any of the same communities?
Are there any you’re surprised to see—or ones you expected but didn’t find on the list?
What communities do you belong to?
Whether they’re big or small, quirky or conventional, deeply personal or widely known, share them all.
I’m always curious about the ways we overlap, and I believe there’s beauty in both our differences and our connections.
Let’s celebrate them together.
Thanks for being here.
Talk soon,
Laura Alyn 💖
