Hey everyone, thanks for being here.
If you read my last post on curriculum, I tried to do it with husband. Well, that didn’t work out. So here’s what I’m doing instead:
- First:
- I listed out what scenes (communities) I’m a part of or places I frequent (or want to go more often):
- if you want to follow along but don’t do anything outside of work, you can look to your saved items on social media
- if you don’t save stuff on social media, go to a public library and see what topics catch your attention
- if you want to follow along but don’t do anything outside of work, you can look to your saved items on social media
- For me, its Hula, Astrology, Art/Music, Plants, Dreams, Weed, Multilingualism, and Ways of Knowing
- Other examples: Rave Scene, Skateboard Scene, Fashion Scene, Travel Scene, Fitness Scene, etc..
- Basically its a group you’re devoted to keeping up with the latest. If you’re a Swiftie, for instance, you know what you’re going to be doing at midnight tonight. You’re consuming the latest knowledge from that source.
- I listed out what scenes (communities) I’m a part of or places I frequent (or want to go more often):
- Second:
- To make sure that the scenes I chose were well-rounded, I assigned them to different categories.
- Ex. 1: These categories came from a girl on TikTok. I added love just so each category had three because aren’t we all forever students of it?
- Richer: Art/Music, Dreams, Weed
- Hotter: Hula, Plants, Love
- Smarter: Astrology, Multilingualism, Ways of Knowing
- Ex. 2: These categories come from the Ornelian Framework to ensure all parts of self are included and willing. It’s interesting how the scenes collapsed on themselves in this configuration.
- Soul: Astrology, Dreams
- Mind: Multilingualism, Ways of Knowing
- Spirit: Weed, Plants
- Body: Art/Music, Hula

- Third:
- I put together a book list. Instead of going off the list of scenes, I allowed myself to pick books that I was super excited to read and then crossed-examined if it fit on the list. I get really excited about a lot of books as you’ll see (and that’s the revised list!). I also add where/how I got each book.
- if you want to join in but don’t have the budget, go to public libraries to check out books in these subjects
- often libraries have a free book section too
- if you want to join in but don’t have the time or get bored easily, try to find daily books that you can turn to a random page instead of going in numerical order.
- if you want to join in but don’t have the budget, go to public libraries to check out books in these subjects
- My book list:
- It’s All Magic: 365 Reflections on Astrology, Tarot, and Manifestation by Aliza Kelly
- Last year’s Christmas gift that I’ve been working through all year
- Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan
- I found this book today at the Sierra Madre Library’s Free Book Section. I was either supposed to read this in school but didn’t or did read it and don’t remember it. I read the first line, “Our Land is Alive” and knew this was the book for me. Not to mention that it takes place in Aguas Calientes where my grandfather is from.
- Sound Healing: How to Use Sound to Beat Stress & Anxiety by Farzana Ali
- I found this book at Five Below.
- Juegos Tradicionales Mexicanos: Divertidas Actividades para Preservar Nuestras Costumbres by Gretel Garcia & Eduardo Torrijos
- I found this book at the Echo Park Branch Library’s Free Book Section.
- Forest Bathing: How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness by Dr. Qing Li
- I first checked this book out from Sierra Madre. I really liked it so I bought it off amazon.
- From This Day Forward by Toni Sciarra Poynter
- Talk about being in the right place at the right time, I was going to a dream class and the instructor was giving out free books. I took several home. This was one of them.
- Know Yourself: A Book of Questions by Irene Smit & Astrid Van Der Hulst
- Another Five Below Find!

- I know it seems overwhelming but I only read between a paragraph and 3 pages of each book. The quickest I’ve gone through them all has been thirty mins. The longest I’ve taken is two hours.
- I don’t do it every night either. I do it when I feel like it. I trust myself to come back to it regularly and I have.
- I put together a book list. Instead of going off the list of scenes, I allowed myself to pick books that I was super excited to read and then crossed-examined if it fit on the list. I get really excited about a lot of books as you’ll see (and that’s the revised list!). I also add where/how I got each book.
- Fourth:
- I added a bunch of social media accounts who are leaders of the scenes.
- Here’s what each page looks like now:
- PubLish: Art/Music, Hula
- consumption of art
- ILA: Multilingualism, Ways of Knowing
- unification of knowledge/people
- Belasprii: Plants, Astrology
- production of art (plants and stars tell the best hidden stories; they are also the best teachers of creativity as they are constantly creating)
- Grounded Spirits: Weed, Dreams
- unification of self (with weed and dreams as guides)
- PubLish: Art/Music, Hula
- Here’s the updated SMSB configuration:
- Soul: Art/Music, Dreams
- Mind: Multilingualism, Ways of Knowing
- Spirit: Plants, Astrology
- Body: Weed, Hula
- Here’s the same configuration as above without the captions:
- PubLish: Art/Music, Hula
- ILA: Multilingualism, Ways of Knowing
- Belasprii: Plants, Astrology
- Grounded Spirits: Weed, Dreams
- Here’s what each page looks like now:
- I added a bunch of social media accounts who are leaders of the scenes.
- Fifth:
- I’m sharing in hopes of meeting more people in the scene(s)!
Stay tuned for more updates about what I learn and how I organize my learning!
Till next time,
Laura Alyn
